The Lirica is a very beautiful ship. It has a quiet elegance which is
very impressive (which should be apparent in the photos). We noted a
computerized map on deck 6 which shows the Lirica's actual route and it's
current location. We had the compulsory general emergency drill the
second day. Our station was in the Casino (we never went outside), a huge
crowd of people not organized in rows like other cruises, and no roll call.
The start of the drill was announced on the intercom in all the different
languages, & all the info at the drill was also in all the different languages.
The 2nd day daily program had "MSC LIRICA, THE SILENT SHIP, We inform all
guests that for your convenience no announcements will be made on board our
vessel during the cruise. Only for today's drill, on disembarkation day
and for emergencies public announcements will be made." Generally they
held to that fairly well.
There was a ping pong tournament, which seemed to have a fair number of
participants having a good time. A number of different times there were
organized darts (seemed like many participants) being played with a large crowd
gathered around who would groan or applaud with gusto often. A band was
frequently at the outside tent-like awning covered La Pergola in the afternoon
(next to the pool area). Additionally, a pasta cooking demonstration,
sangria making demonstration, & food carving demonstration were held in that
area. In the afternoon around the pool area stage, the enthusiastic
"animation team" (social directors & entertainers), had various games, dance
lessons (mostly line dancing), & calisthenics (some people did them in front of
the stage & some did them while in the pool fountains), & music was often played
over the pool area intercom.
The casino was relatively small & we tended to use it less than on other ships.
Inside the casino, there were 2 roulette, 2 black jack, & 2 poker tables, 29
quarter slots (12 non-video, 12 poker, 7 video), 4 fifty cent video slots, & 9
dollar slots (5 non-video, 4 video), though not all worked. The slots had
problems accepting bills. Rarely did any bill work the first try.
Sometimes one had to give up & get different ones from the cashier. The
slots were tortuous. The newer bills with the color in them, were accepted
by the slots, but did not register any money. When this happened, I
turned on the attendant light as I did not want to leave my seat, but eventually
had to do so. I asked the person next to me to hold the slot machine (with
my unregistered money in it). I told the manager & he said he would be
over in a while, & a slot attendant came by finally, before the manager.
The slot attendant told me the slot machines "ate" the new bills without
registering any money. I asked the manager why he would be willing to
torture his patrons in such a way. I suggested he instruct his cashiers
not to give change in the new bills without warning, and the casino post a
warning message about the new bills. He said he would do that. It
was still not posted halfway through the cruise. I mentioned it again, but
at the reception desk, & the posted message appeared at the casino cashiers
cage. I found the reception desk to be very friendly (smiling) &
responsive throughout the cruise.
