The Key West Images are
below. Before we took the cruise, we called MSC, told them we
were taking the Jan 26, 2004 Lirica cruise, & asked which ports they would
tender & which they would dock. They told us they would dock Key West. We
were told we would tender after we got onto the ship, & it was promoted by
MSC saying we would be able to see the legendary Key West sunset, since cruise
ships are asked to leave the docks (maybe just Mallory Square dock) before sunset (obviously, they could have
docked, & then when they left the dock, could have anchored away from the dock
to see the sunset). The US immigration officials could not board the ship for
more than an hour due to rough seas (though they are more experienced at that
sort
of thing). Because of the rough seas, none of the passengers were able
to tender into Key West. We got the impression, MSC would be tendering each
time in the future, but apparently we were wrong.
See below. We did call them, Angela
(the nicest MSC agent, said I could use her name), 2/16/2004 & asked again.
Angela said MSC is supposed to dock in Key West & they had technical problems. I
mentioned that we were told on the day we boarded, Key West would be tendered, & we heard
no mention of a technical problem. She repeated Lirica was supposed to dock in Key West.
We noted that the Melody was scheduled to dock at the
Mallory Square dock on the day the Lirica was to arrive. It must be noted that
the Mallory Square dock is too small for the MSC Lirica. It's
possible, that was the "technical problem" Angela referenced.
The Key West sunset we saw from anchorage turned out to be rather bland. We drove down to Key West after we disembarked the ship in Ft Lauderdale,
Saturday (the next day). As we stopped along the way, we did not get into
Key West until it was almost dark, so I left my camera in the car, & did not get any photos, except for the ones I
took the next day of the beach when we were leaving. Fortunately,
Ed, our cousin, brought his camera to Mallory Square & did get a few good photos of the Key West Sunset.
We enjoyed the Mallory Square Sunset Celebration. The conch
fritters are outstanding, & all the small vendors setup in Mallory Square seem a
little different than the usual. There are also musicians & music coming
from the surrounding areas.

Key West has 3
cruise ship docks, Pier B, Outer Mole, & Mallory Square. Mallory Square
dock is smaller than the others & will not accommodate many cruise ships,
including MSC Lirica.
