Quotes
(Diane and Buil's experiences are below the others):
You will find (if you haven't already) that the one big drawback to
Renaissance is getting to and from the ship. They would not tell us what time
the plane left LAX until a few weeks before the departure date.
The key is to get to the airport early if you care where you sit on the
plane. They don't give out seat assignments until you show up. The line is very
long (they're really disorganized at this) if you get there later. There were
several honeymoon couples, and one of them didn't even get to sit together,
which is absolutely ridiculous. You're also stuck with the same seat assignment
on the way back. So it pays to get there as soon as they open (8 a.m., I
think?)...(ed. there were numerous similar remarks)
However, where you sit doesn't matter re: seeing out the window. You're over
LA for a very short time, then it's seven hours of water. It's pretty dark both
when you arrive and when you leave Papeete and you can't see much.
...got in line at Hawaiian Airlines at LAX...8:30 (for the
12:30 flight),...already 50 people ahead of us...Check-in was very smooth and
while...waited...met some of the people I had been in e-mail contact with
through Renaissance’s bulletin board...really made the wait seem short...checked
our two 22” carry-ons through to our cabin on the ship and were astounded at
the huge amount of luggage other people...(...got quite a few “is that all
you’re taking?”...responded...been to Tahiti before and you needed extremely
little)...the long wait in the departure lounge started, but it too was
abbreviated by meeting more of my e-mail correspondents...
Arrived in Papeete at night, in a light rain and were whisked
through customs and immigration...smooth as can be... ship was only 15
minutes away...getting on it was again smooth and efficient (Renaissance has
embarkation and disembarkation down to a science!!! The best ever.)
Moving you from the airport to the ship is excellent, the best
I’ve ever seen on any cruise line.

DIANE and BUIL's EXPERIENCE:
Enqueued for Hawaiian Airlines 3pm flight at LAX...a little
more than 4 hours early...only 4 or five couples in front of us...we were moved
into another line for those who had Destinations Club
Cards...many people
(50-75) were processed just after that in another line which formed suddenly,
but all was well as we were given good seats on one of the sides...check-in was
rapid and efficient...met many of our new e-mail contacts, great fun...talked to one of the
12:30pm flight people who said one couple of their group of 3 or 4 couples were
given the 3pm flight and not allowed to change to be with those who booked with
them (I've heard this before, Ren might want to work on this).
With great anticipation, we were allowed to board first before
business class, as we had Destinations Club
Cards (not business class,
though)...the flight attendants were cheerful and exuberant...they passed out 3
forms (cards) for each person to fill out (maybe statistics, emigration,
customs)...hot towels...normal airline meal food, though there was a colorful
orchid flower on
tray...flowers in a few of the bathrooms...flight only partially full and some
stretched out to sleep...a long flight...the captain announced one could
"see" the equator looking out the window, which caught some who were
drowsy...more
hot towels.
Arrived 9+pm...had stopped raining...walked down stairs from
plane to tarmac, then brief walk to terminal...crowned us with leys...took our
statistics cards...checked our passports and emigration cards...boarded a bus
and drove to ship with a Polynesian giving short welcome and intro to Papeete speech...a
fairly quick exciting process.
Arrived at dockside 10-15 minutes later and stood in brief
line (letters of alphabet style for last name...a few letters for each
line)...Ren person took possession of our passports and the last of the 3 cards
we filled out...gave us each a Ren Great Times card (for ship purchases, room
key, and swiped to exit/enter ship).
The wonderful significant air of exciting anticipation as we first entered the ship
(one of the things we like most about cruising), the R4 was absolutely
beautiful, we we
taken to our fine looking stateroom by a smiling room stewardess...king-size
bed...room safe...we explored the R4...a very good beginning.
